We’d heard this is the best restaurant in the area, but
remained skeptical as we parked in the dirt lot. Our fears evaporated
completely when we walked in to find newly-grizzled Stan Goldman
and Jim Moret of the pool feed looking to chow down. Table for
4 for Jim? “Never heard of you…25 minutes,” we
thought we heard the hostess reply.
Luckily, our party had made a reservation and was promptly
escorted through the main dining room to a cozy table on the
windowed back wall.
We are happy to report the food is excellent and the one
page menu features a fine variety of hearty local fare with
just enough Asian influence as to be both delicious and non-threatening.
Our party ordered the gamut of salads, appetizers (veggie spring
rolls, tuna tartare), and entrees (pork chops, filet, salmon,
and diver scallops) – there were no losers in the bunch
(company excluded). The pork chop was top-notch even by LA/NY
standards. Ditto the desserts – the special dessert: a
martini glass layered with various chocolate mousses.
Mattei’s features a full bar and so-so wine list featuring
the vin du jour: local Pinot Noirs.
The highlight of our meal came last, when a brother of one
of the principals in this case (HINT: last name not Doe)
came over to gab with us over coffee.
